Visit our Total Eclipse in Pittsford web page for full details about the eclipse in Pittsford.
The Town will offer eclipse viewing glasses free to Pittsford residents this Friday, 4/5 at Town Hall and Saturday, 4/6 at the Supervisor's Open House at the Library. The Town has 1,500 eclipse glasses to give to residents free of charge, limit two per household. Pittsford’s eclipse glasses are ISO 12312-2-certified and endorsed as safe for viewing by the American Astronomical Society and NASA. See details below.
"The eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event. We want everyone to enjoy it safely" said Town Supervisor Bill Smith. "Don’t look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses. To provide for safe viewing, we’re distributing some ISO-certified eclipse glasses and sharing some safety tips." For more safety tips, see our Eclipse Viewing Safety Tips sheet.
Pittsford residents can pick up eclipse glasses while supplies last:
• On Friday, April 5, from 8:00am-4:00pm in the Supervisor’s office at Town Hall. The Supervisor’s office is located on the first floor of Town Hall at 11 South Main Street. Limit two pairs of eclipse glasses per household.
• On Saturday, April 6, from 8:00-10:00am during an extended Supervisor Open House with Town Supervisor Bill Smith, held in the Pittsford Community Library’s Fisher Meeting Room. Limit two pairs of eclipse glasses per household.
The Town will post an update on Facebook if its supply of glasses runs out.
For those who want to purchase solar eclipse glasses, the Rochester Museum and Science Center has a list of Rochester-area retailers selling them: www.rochestereclipse2024.org/eclipse-glasses-buying-locations/. If purchasing glasses, always ask the retailer whether the glasses are ISO12312-2-certified and who manufactured them to make sure the glasses are safe for viewing the sun.
The Town also has put together a Pittsford Eclipse Viewing Sites map and a Viewing Sites Info sheet.
"For Pittsford residents, the best and easiest location to view the eclipse may be from home," said Supervisor Smith. "But for visitors and those looking for other viewing options, our Town parks and some other areas will be open. Our viewing map and information sheet will make it easy to find a viewing location."
