Erie Canal Nature Preserve Official Ribbon Cutting Thursday, 4/22/21

A new Town park protects and preserves a unique ecology in the heart of Pittsford.

We’ll hold our official ribbon-cutting for the Town’s new Erie Canal Nature Preserve at noon on Earth Day – Thursday, April 22. Come visit our new Nature Preserve and learn about our plans for an onsite Native Plants and Pollinators Garden!

Preserving green space and offering a healthy recreational environment for Pittsford’s residents has been a Town priority for years. The Erie Canal Nature Preserve is one of the Town’s most ambitious projects in recent memory. It protects and conserves a beautiful area of unspoiled land with a unique ecology.

The Preserve encompasses approximately 30 acres of natural wetlands, woodlands and meadows between the Erie Canal and the Auburn Trail. It includes a thriving and healthy frog breeding habitat with four ponds and adjacent wetlands. The Town made significant, but low-impact, improvements to the area that make the site accessible to the public. The preserve offers a creekside rest area, with overlooks of the Frog Ponds and meadows, and includes an elevated boardwalk trail allowing minimal-impact access to the wetlands. A new trail connects the Canal Path with the Auburn Trail.

The Nature Preserve entrance is along the Erie Canalway (Towpath) Trail – a short walk east from the Monroe Avenue Bridge or west from the North Main Street Bridge. See a map and information here.
