Town and Color Pittsford Green to create a Bird Harbor at Great Embankment Park
The Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor has become an important part of many birds’ migration route – from bald eagles to bluebirds, and from hawks and herons to hummingbirds. Unfortunately, over the past decades much of the vegetation that has moved into the woods and wetlands along the canal doesn’t provide appropriate nutrition and shelter to help these birds along their journey or to support the ones who stay. But the Town of Pittsford is partnering with Color Pittsford Green to help!
We’re going to create a "Bird Harbor" – a native shrub and perennial garden along the canal at the Great Embankment Park. The garden will provide critical habitat for the birds that make the park their home and those who stop by to refuel on their journey.
Community members can help make a Bird Harbor at Great Embankment Park a reality – join us for a planting day on Friday, October 7. It’s the perfect way to start your long weekend! Please come and lend a hand (or a shovel)! We'll be planting trees, shrubs and perennials on October 7 from 10:00am to Noon and from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Come for the day or just an hour, and don’t forget your gardening gloves. Light refreshments will be provided. Contact Pittsford Town Parks General Foreman Jess Neal at JNeal@townofpittsford.org or Ellen Henry of Color Pittsford Green at echenry@rochester.rr.com with questions. Rain date is October 14, 2022. Great Embankment Park is located at 631 Marsh Road and is accessible via the Erie Canal path as well.
The new habitat will encourage an array of native bird species to visit and make their home in the park, such as the cedar waxwings pictured below!
