The Town of Pittsford is located in the southeastern portion of Monroe County in upstate New York. Rochester is the closest metropolitan area and is approximately eight miles to the northwest. The town of Mendon lies to the south, the town of Perinton to the east, the towns of Henrietta and Brighton to the west, and the towns of Brighton and Penfield to the north.

By taking a scenic drive from Pittsford, you could find yourself in the Finger Lakes Region to the south, Buffalo and Niagra Falls to the west and Syracuse to the east. New York City is approximately 300 miles to the southeast and Canada is north of Rochester, just across Lake Ontario.

The "Village of Pittsford" is an incorporated village within the Town of Pittsford. Residents of the Village are also residents of the Town.

The Town of Pittsford has a rich history. Pittsford was an established community in the early 1800's while nearby Rochester was founded nearly a generation later. In the 1820's the Erie Canal came through the area creating a steadily increasing population. The late 1880's and early 1900's brought the first signs of suburban development with the establishment of large country estates. Suburban development reached a high level in the 1950's when residential subdivision was greatly accelerated. Pittsford has continued to grow due to its reputation as one of the more attractive suburbs and because of its reputation for excellent schools.
